Welcome to Clinical Research at Sheffield
Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and the University of Sheffield have formed a partnership to promote, host, facilitate and implement the findings of clinical and healthcare research in Sheffield.
The research strengths of both institutions range from basic science, experimental medicine and clinical research through to clinical application. Research is carried out in a world-class research environment whose facilities include the newly opened state-of-the-art Sheffield Institute for Translational Neuroscience and the well established MRC Centre for Developmental and Biomedical Genetics. Key areas of research strength lie within the newly developed Academic Directorates. The purpose-built Clinical Research Facility offers state-of-the-art, dedicated research facilities to provide a specialist environment for the conduct of high quality experimental and clinical research.
Strengths in applying research into practice are exemplified by the South Yorkshire NIHR Collaborations for Leadership in Applied Health Research and Care (CLAHRC) with its focus on the self-management of chronic disease.
The NIHR Devices for Dignity Healthcare Technology Cooperative is a Department of Health I4I programme developing innovative products, processes and services to help people with debilitating conditions deal with their daily challenges. Sheffield Institute for Studies on Aging is a core group of specialists in gerontology research and training who undertake cross-faculty research with academics and clinicians with active interests in gerontology.
The School of Heath and Related Research specialises in health services and public health research, and the application of health economics and decision science to the development of health services and the improvement of public health, including Emergency and Intermediate Care, Primary Care and Community Care, Mental Health, Ageing and Vascular Surgery.

Funding
Sheffield is a major recipient of NIHR funding as well as attracting funding from national and international funders, including major medical research charities, research councils, the European Union and industry. Sheffield Teaching Hospitals works closely with the NIHR South Yorkshire Comprehensive Local Research Network in the delivery of its industry programme and Research Nurse Framework.
Support for Researchers
Researchers working in Sheffield are supported throughout projects by the Clinical Research Office comprising of staff from:
- Sheffield Teaching Hospitals including Research Coordinators and the Finance team
- Research & Innovation Services and Research Finance Department within the University of Sheffield
- The University of Sheffield's Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health
- Information Resources within the School of Health and Related Research
- and the NIHR Research Design Service for Yorkshire & the Humber and the University's Clinical Trials Research Unit.
Researchers also have access to the purpose-built Clinical Research Facility with its highly trained research nurses working across the five Sheffield Teaching Hospitals sites.
