Dementia Research Advisory Group South Yorkshire

The Dementia Research Advisory Group South Yorkshire (DRAiSY) brings together those affected by dementia to inform research.

The group aims to:

  • Enable the patient and carer’s perspectives to be heard, which might otherwise be overlooked
  • Provide knowledge for the researchers based on lived experience
  • Identify and prioritise research topics that are important to patients
  • Improve recruitment to research studies
  • Help identify improved measures for research outcomes
  • Build public credibility and trust in clinical research
  • Identify barriers to patient involvement
  • Comment on research project documentation
  • Help write lay summaries for research proposals and Research Ethics Committees

Our Vision

We bring together those affected by Dementia to inform research. We are a group of individuals that use our unique knowledge of living with dementia, and those affected by the disease, to join the fight against it; helping shape future research.

Who are we?

Group members have all been affected by Dementia including patients and family members. We have a shared interest in enhancing patient care, improving understanding of the disease, and helping to develop new treatments and ways to manage symptoms. We are friendly and welcoming to new members, both patients and researchers alike.

What do we do?

Our main activity is to advise researchers from the South Yorkshire region involved in researching Dementia. We offer clinical and scientific researchers feedback on their research proposals, ideas to improve patient involvement and assistance in communicating their research to wider audiences.

How do we do it?

The group holds quarterly face-to-face meetings at the Sheffield Institute for Translational Neuroscience. Researchers come to our meetings to directly discuss their research. The group has close links with the local institutions involved in Dementia care to further aid research and share this work with the wider community.

What don't we do?

  • We can't offer grants
  • We're not a platform from which to take personal issues forward
  • We aren't a complaints forum
