National Institute for Health Research (NIHR)

The NIHR is a national body that acts as the research arm of the Department of Health; as such it commissions and manages around £1Billion worth of research annually within England, mainly within the NHS. The NIHR vision is “To improve the health and wealth of the nation through research”.

The NIHR put patient and the public at the heart of everything they do and as such, they expect the same from all the research they commission.

Therefore, all research applications to NIHR must involve Patients and the Public in their design and if successful, in their management.

 

INVOLVE

INVOLVE is funded by the NIHR to support public involvement in the NHS, public health and social care research.

They act as a national advisory group and their role is to bring together expertise, insight and experience in the field of public involvement in research, with the aim of advancing it as an essential part of the process by which research is identified, prioritised, designed, conducted and disseminated.

Clinical Research Network

The Clinical Research Network is funded by the NIHR and is composed of 15 Local Clinical Research Networks that cover the length and breadth of England, this region’s CRN is called Yorkshire & Humber. The host for our regions CRN in Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS foundation Trust.

Collaborations for Leadership in Applied Health Research & Care (CLAHRCs)

NIHR Collaborations for Leadership in Applied Health Research and Care bring together a collaboration of the local providers of NHS services and NHS commissioners, universities, other relevant local organisations and the relevant Academic Health Science Network.

CLAHRCs conduct applied health research across the NHS, and translate research findings into improved outcomes for patients. The 13 NIHR CLAHRCs primarily focus on research targeted at chronic disease and public health interventions.

Regional (Yorkshire & Humber)

Local Clinical Research Network  (LCRN)

Each local Clinical Research Network delivers research across 30 clinical specialties; this region is active in all of these areas. The CRN supports research by ensuring infrastructure (such as research nurses) is in place to help deliver the research, and that NHS supports costs are paid. These are the costs that at NHS institution incur whilst delivering their research.

The Clinical Research Office within this hospital works in partnership with colleagues from the CRN to work on initiates within PPI. One such initiative is Clinical Research Ambassadors, of which this hospital is looking to recruit volunteers into. Please click here for more information.

Research Design Services

The National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Research Design Service for Yorkshire and the Humber (RDS YH) is one of ten regional services across England who each give design and methodological support to health researchers who are developing research applications.

The RDS YH is based at the Universities of Sheffield, Leeds and York.  The service is managed in Sheffield, with a team of specialist advisers including statisticians, qualitative researchers, epidemiologists, health economists, information specialists and advisers who have expertise in patient and public involvement (PPI) in research.
