Clinical Research Office. A partnership between Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and the University of Sheffield

Our Research

As one of the largest teaching hospitals in the UK, we are committed to undertaking a wide range of excellent research for the benefit of our patients. The Trust currently supports over 700 active research studies and more than 12,000 patients and healthy volunteers have taken part in our studies in the past year.

Sheffield Teaching Hospitals Foundation Trust is one of the UK’s largest NHS Foundation Trusts and busiest teaching hospitals. We have formed a partnership with the University of Sheffield to promote, host, facilitate and implement the findings of clinical and healthcare research in Sheffield. Our research covers all of our clinical care across our 27 directorates.

Academic directorates - leading the way

To facilitate our research, we have created fourteen academic directorates – these directorates focus strongly on combining research with clinical care and include:

  • Accident and Emergency
  • Cardiology and Cardiothoracic Surgery
  • Communicable Diseases
  • Diabetes and Endocrinology
  • Medical Imaging and Physics
  • Neurosciences
  • Obstetrics, Gynaecology & Neonatology
  • Oral and Dental
  • Professional Services
  • Renal Services
  • Respiratory Medicine
  • Specialised Cancer
  • Specialised Medicine
  • Urology

There are many different types of research, many of which do not involve taking medication. The different types of research are explained here.

In addition, details of the Clinical reseach activity undertaken by all NHS Trusts across England can be found on the Guardian webpage - http://www.theguardian.com/healthcare-network/nihr-crn-partner-zone
