Introduction

The department of Respiratory Physiology at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals provides respiratory function testing services for people who are either patients staying in hospital, or people visiting for respiratory tests as outpatients. Our team of professionally-qualified Respiratory Physiologists work closely with colleagues from the Respiratory Medicine and other hospital and community departments, and we pride ourselves on our professionalism, high diagnostic accuracy and standard of patient care.

Respiratory Physiology services are provided at both the Northern General and Royal Hallamshire Hospitals in Sheffield. The majority of our service is situated at the Northern General Hospital in the Outpatients department, A floor, Brearley Wing, in a dedicated facility opened in 2013. Here we undertake tests to measure breathing, oxygen levels and airway resistance (such as spirometry and oximetry); we can also measure people’s exercise capacity using our 15 metre walking corridor, and undertake full cardio-pulmonary exercise testing with exercise bike and treadmill equipment.

We also offer sleep diagnostic and therapeutic services for people with conditions such as obstructive sleep apnoea. Regular review and follow-up of patients receiving ventilatory support is undertaken by members of our highly trained team.

At the Royal Hallamshire Hospital, we also have a Respiratory Function Unit situated within the Pulmonary Vascular Disease Unit on Ward M2. The Respiratory Function Unit provides all pulmonary function tests for patients with Pulmonary Hypertension and is responsible for seeing both inpatients and outpatients within the Pulmonary Vascular Disease Unit. It also provides a service for all other inpatient wards within the Royal Hallamshire Hospital.

Respiratory Testing services for clinical research

The Respiratory Physiology Department provides support to a wide range of research for the Academic Directorate of Respiratory Medicine and other specialties including Neuroscience, Cancer, Cardiology and Professional Services. We undertake high-quality studies supported by the UK Clinical Research Network Portfolio, charities and research councils, and commercial partners, with the aim of improving and developing the best treatments available for people with respiratory and other health conditions.

Our research staff are experienced in respiratory testing for clinical research and qualified with Good Clinical Practice certification, the internationally-recognised training for clinical research. Tests performed have historically been used to determine diagnosis, monitoring of drug effects, inclusion and exclusion criteria, and end-points for studies.
