Sheffield Teaching Hospital's Neurosurgical Department provides a regional service for a population of 2.2 million people covering South Yorkshire, North Derbyshire and North Lancashire. Approximately 1500 adult and 250 paediatric neurosurgical procedures are performed annually.

The neurosurgery department is becoming increasingly research active, with huge benefit for patients being provided with better access to research. On-going work in the neurosurgery theme includes:
-
Randomised controlled trials comparing the efficacy of neurosurgical techniques. In some instances, where multiple techniques are available, technique is chosen based on the surgeons preference, and evidence is lacking as to which technique is more effective.
-
Drug trials assessing whether treatment can improve outcomes in patients with subarachnoid haemorrhage and chronic subdural haematoma.
-
Research into brain tumours and improving surgical removal of tumours.
