Health Services Research and Cystic Fibrosis

Sheffield Adult Cystic Fibrosis Centre started functioning as a specialist regional centre in 1999 and is a regionally and nationally CF Trust accredited unit.

We treat patients over the age of 16 years, who live in Sheffield, and also, as far as Grimsby, Mablethorpe, Alfreton, Buxton, Lincoln and Wakefield. We have a close liaison with the Sheffield Children's Hospital Paediatric Cystic Fibrosis Centre from whom we receive patients when they reach 16 years of age. We have about 200 patients being treated in our unit and are growing at the rate of about 10 patients per year.

Our 12 bedded Cystic Fibrosis In-Patient unit offers state of the art facilities with single themed rooms all en-suite, with TV, DVD, computer, games console, tea and coffee making facilities. The unit is based on the 3rd floor of the Biomedical Sciences Unit at the Northern General Hospital.

Cystic Fibrosis Research Studies

One of our current CF research studies is the MAGNIFY study:

Study Title: MAGNIFY - Pulmonary Magnetic Resonance Imaging for Cystic Fibrosis

Chief Investigator: Professor Jim Wild, University of Sheffield

Principal Investigator: Dr Hui Hoo, Sheffield Teaching Hospitals

Study details:

The aim of this study is to establish lung MRI as a sensitive method for assessing lung disease in Cystic Fibrosis.

This study is using the most advanced methods for measuring lung function including 2 tests called hyperpolarised gas magnetic resonance imaging (HP MRI) and multiple breath washout (MBW), to better understand changes in the lungs over time.

HP MRI involves taking pictures of the air in your lungs after breathing in a harmless gas (xenon). MBW is a breathing test used to calculate something called the lung clearance index. By measuring these tests on the same day, alongside standard lung function tests, we aim to understand lung function in greater detail than ever before.
