Pulmonary Vascular Disease and Pulmonary Hypertension

Pulmonary Vascular Disease Unit

The Sheffield Pulmonary Vascular Disease Unit (PVDU) is one of the largest pulmonary hypertension treatment centres in Europe with a referral population of approximately 20 million. Patients travel from the Midlands, Nottingham, Manchester, Liverpool, Yorkshire & Humber and Wales to access the specialist services available in Sheffield.

Specialist care is provided by a large team including 10 consultants (including a consultant nurse and pharmacist respectively), specialist nurses and a specialist pharmacy team, along with a multi-professional group of dedicated staff on our fully integrated unit. We currently prescribe specific treatments for over 1,800 patients with all types of pulmonary hypertension and recruit patients for clinical trials exploring new treatments. We run a shared care service with adult congenital heart disease centres.

We offer comprehensive services, including standard diagnostics, multi-modality cardiopulmonary imaging (Echocardiography, CT, MRI, Nuclear) and advanced imaging including hyperpolarised Lung MRI. We have close links with multiple-specialities given the multi-systemic nature of pulmonary hypertension.

Our activity and performance is published in the national audit

We work closely with the patient’s association who are able to offer support for patients and carers: About PH | PHA (phauk.org)

Contact us - Referrals/Patient Queries

Patients in whom pulmonary hypertension or chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension is suspected on the basis of history and echocardiography should be referred promptly for further assessment. We are happy to review patients with pulmonary hypertension where there is diagnostic doubt regarding the form of pulmonary hypertension. We may in some circumstances initially review imaging before deciding whether or not to review the patient physically.

Please use the referral checklist when submitting your outpatient referral.

We prefer referral requests to be sent via email to sht-tr.PVDU@nhs.net. Please do not duplicate the referral via posted mail.
