Donald Heath Programme

The Donald Heath pulmonary hypertension research programme is built on the foundations of the Sheffield Pulmonary Vascular Disease Unit, the UK’s largest specialist PH centre. Strong collaborative links between Professor David Kiely (SPVDU Director), Dr Allan Lawrie (BHF Senior Research Fellow) and NIHR Professor Jim Wild in the Department of Infection, Immunity & Cardiovascular Disease at the University of Sheffield have driven the growth of PH research in Sheffield over the past 15 years.

Our success to date has been to build a cohesive team of successful individuals with common research interests. Our aim is to further develop a research programme that attracts and supports exceptional individuals to join this important field of research.

In 2008 we established a longitudinal PH Biobank and developed a database to collate and link clinical information and treatment and imaging data to these biological samples. This resource underpins our current research as we try to better understand the molecular pathogenesis of pulmonary hypertension and try to develop new ways to treat and care for people with PH. The Donald Heath programme is bolstered by qualitative and humanities research through links with PHA UK, the national association for PH patients.
