The Sheffield Pulmonary Vascular Disease Unit (PVDU) is one of the largest pulmonary hypertension treatment centres in Europe with a referral population of approximately 15 million. Patients travel from the Midlands, Nottingham, Manchester, Liverpool, Yorkshire & Humber and Wales to Sheffield. They receive specialist care from a large team including 5 medical consultants, a nurse consultant, specialist nurses and a specialist pharmacy team, along with a multi-professional group of dedicated staff on our fully integrated unit. We currently prescribe specific treatments for over 1400 patients with all types of Pulmonary Hypertension and recruit patients for clinical trials exploring new treatments.

The Sheffield Pulmonary Hypertension team works closely with the UK Pulmonary Hypertension Association. We recommend the pages of the PHA UK website that provide further information about Pulmonary Hypertension, the tests patients might have and treatments that are available, and answers to frequently asked questions:

Respiratory Function Unit

The Respiratory Function Unit is a respiratory testing laboratory situated within the Pulmonary Vascular Disease Unit on Ward M2 at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital. The lab performs a wide range of pulmonary function, exercise and sleep physiology tests, and is closely linked to the Respiratory Physiology Department based across the city at the Northern General Hospital. The Respiratory Function Unit provides all pulmonary function tests for patients with Pulmonary Hypertension and is responsible for seeing inpatients and outpatients within the Pulmonary Vascular Disease Unit. It also provides a service for all other inpatient wards at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital.

The Unit also supports research which is essential to help us continually develop and improve the care and treatment of people with Pulmonary Hypertension and patients visiting the PVDU.
