Sheffield Institute for Translational Neuroscience
Officially opened by Her Majesty The Queen, the £18m Sheffield Institute for Translational Neuroscience is a world-class facility bringing together 150 international clinicians and scientists working together to bring new hope to patients suffering from motor neurone disease.
Led by Professor Pamela Shaw, a consultant neurologist at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, the centre is the only one of its kind in Europe.
Researchers from SITraN are currently trialling a new device called a diaphragm pacing system, which delivers electric pulses to strengthen the diaphragm, the thin dome-shaped muscle which helps breathing – making life more comfortable for patients who suffer with the illness.
