The Government wishes to see a dramatic and sustained improvement in the performance of providers of NHS services in initiating and delivering clinical research. The aim is to increase the number of patients participating in research and to enhance the nation's attractiveness as a host for research. As such Sheffield Teaching Hospitals produces quarterly reports to the NIHR Central Commissioning Facility on its performance against two key metrics: 1. Recruitment of the first patient onto a clinical trial within 70 days of receipt of a valid research application to the Trust - Performance in Initiating. 2. Recruitment of target number of patients to a clinical trial within the recruitment period agreed with the Sponsor - Performance in Delivery.
