New video highlights importance of involving public in clinical research

A NEW six-minute ‘Talking Heads’ style video raising awareness of the importance of involving the public in clinical research has been developed by the Professional Services Directorate at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust in conjunction with the North Trent Cancer Research Network Consumer Research Panel and Sheffield Hallam University.

The short video aims to reach a large and diverse group of NHS staff so that clinical staff can help highlight the different ways patients and members of the public can get involved in research, including helping to design and shape research projects.

According to a recent poll, 79 per cent of people think it is important for the NHS to carry out clinical research – whilst less than three per cent think it is unimportant.

Featuring personal insights from Dave Ardron and Jacqui Gath, members of the North Trent Cancer Research Network Consumer Research Panel, the video highlights a range of discussions including:

  • What does public, patient involvement in research mean?
  • How can patients get involved in research?
  • What are the benefits of getting involved in research?
  • First-hand perspectives of what getting involved in research has meant to patients
  • How can patients, members of the public and clinicians all work together to improve the research process

Sabrina Eltringham, PPI Coordinator for the Professional Services Directorate, for Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, said: “Patients can make a valuable contribution to our research through the knowledge, skills and experience that they bring. Involving patients in our research can help improve our research quality and make our research more relevant. ”

The video is due to be showcased at Sheffield Hallam University’s Growing Collaborative Research event today (Tuesday 22 July).
