Young gastroenterologist wins national award

Dr Alenka Brooks, a specialist registrar in gastroenterology at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, was named as Young Gastroenterologist of the Year 2015: Emerging Leader by the British Society of Gastroenterologists (BSG).

Dr Brooks has led numerous projects to improve services and develop opportunities for others in the profession.

These include training as a Microsystems coach to lead quality improvement work, conceiving the regional Sheffield Women in Medicine (SWiM) and Supporting Women In Gastroenterology (SWiG) networks to improve the representation of women in medical jobs, and leading the BSG Trainee Section to represent and support young doctors pursuing careers in gastroenterology.

Her achievements include winning funding for a project examining the effects of Inflammatory Bowel Disease on people living with the condition, working with other departments to reduce surgery waiting times and winning the NHS Employers Personal, Fair and Diverse Champion Individual Award for establishing SWiM.

Dr Brooks said: “I am delighted to win this award, which shows the great impact young doctors can have in the profession by taking on leadership roles.

“I hope other young doctors will be encouraged to develop leadership skills and contribute ideas which will ultimately lead to improved care for our patients.”

The Young Gastroenterologist: Emerging Leader award is designed to identify and highlight talented trainee leaders nationally in order to promote leadership in gastroenterology for the future.
